چکیده

The mechanisms of general anesthesia constitute one of the great unsolved problems of classical neuropharmacology. Since the discovery of general anesthesia, hundreds of substances have been tested and found to possess anesthetic activity. Anesthetics differ tremendously in their chemical, physical, and pharmacological properties, greatly varying in size, in chemically active groups, and in the combinations of interactions and chemical reactions that they can undergo. Platelet receptors.

Well-understood functions for "traditional" platelet receptors are described, but "newer" receptors are equally discussed. Receptors are described biochemically (structure, ligand(s), protein partners, and function) and whenever possible, their clinical importance (mutations, polymorphisms, syndrome) are highlighted.

The Mitochondrial Ca2+ Uniporter: Structure, Function, and Pharmacology.

Mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake is crucial for an array of cellular functions while an imbalance can elicit cell death. In this chapter, we briefly reviewed the various modes of mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake and our current understanding of mitochondrial Ca2+ homeostasis in regards to cell physiology and pathophysiology. Further, this chapter focuses on the molecular identities, intracellular regulators ...

Fundamentals of optical imaging.

Optical imaging techniques offer simplistic while highly sensitive modalities for molecular imaging research. In this chapter, the major instrumental necessities for microscopic and whole-animal imaging techniques are introduced. Subsequently, the resulting imaging modalities using visible or near-infrared light are presented and discussed. The aim is to show the current capabilities and applic...

Estrogen signaling in the regulation of female reproductive functions.

Estrogens influence fertility and infertility in animals. This chapter reviews the use of estrogen as a contraceptive through the regulation of its production and action. It is concluded that the use of specific agonists and antagonists of estrogen action that avoid the global and unwanted side effects of estrogen offers new potential methods of contraception.

Placebo, nocebo, and learning mechanisms.

Recent substantial laboratory and theoretical research hints for different learning mechanisms regulating the formation of placebo and nocebo responses. Moreover, psychological and biological variants may play a role as modulators of learning mechanisms underlying placebo and nocebo responses. In this chapter, we present pioneering and recent human and nonhuman research that has impressively in...

Mutation-specific pharmacology of the long QT syndrome.

The congenital long QT syndrome is a rare disease in which inherited mutations of genes coding for ion channel subunits, or channel interacting proteins, delay repolarization of the human ventricle and predispose mutation carriers to the risk of serious or fatal arrhythmias. Though a rare disorder, the long QT syndrome has provided invaluable insight from studies that have bridged clinical and ...
